Milt Caniff on being your own audience

SABA: How closely does an artist have to identify with his audience?
CANIFF: Essentially, you're a pretty good cross-section of an audience in the first place, or you wouldn't be doing it. So you can trust your own judgment, generally speaking. This isn't always true, and of course, you can go off in all kinds of tangents, like Percy Crosby did. Poor guy, he lost his marbles. But in the beginning, he was his own best audience.
