Mort Walker on why he sometimes signed his name as "Addison"

MARSCHALL: You sign the strip "Addison" along with a little figure walking. Is that to be in every strip or just occasionally as a Puckish signature?
WALKER: Every strip that it fits into. The reason for that is that I have a contract with King Features that prohibits me from doing a strip for another syndicate and signing it "Mort Walker." As a matter of fact, they said: 44 or a pseudonym.' So when I sold Gamin and Patches we conferred about it at United, and they asked me what I would do about it. said I'd draw a little figure walking down in the corner, and when people ask what it is, I'll say, "Walker!" [Laughs] But then I wrote a note to [King Features President] Joe D'Angelo and said that I wanted to cooperate and everything, but could I use my first name on this new strip-Addison. My name is Addison Morton Walker.
MARSCHALL: And you used that name on Boner's Ark....
WALKER: So Joe D'Angelo wrote back and said that they had no objections to using Addison, so I wrote Addison with a little walker behind it for Addison Walker.
