Walt Kelly on political figures who don't like him
KELLY:... I hate to keep picking on Rube [Goldberg], he's the only cartoonist older than myself here, but the thing is that his early work had a lot of social comment in it, real bite. Boob McNutt was part of it, but there were other things before that. He wanted to say something about the stupid world he saw around him, and this should be the path of all cartoonists, that the world stinks.
KANE: But nobody would be able to tell if the world stinks through what you do, because all you show is a joyous celebration of life and the most lovable characters in the whole world...
KELLY: Good, I'm getting away with it. A lot of people don't feel that way. A lot of people like old Marse George down there in Alabama. Governor Wallace, he doesn't like me. And he's got good reason. And Mr. Nixon doesn't like me, and he's got good reason. And Mr. Humphrey doesn't like me, and he's got good reason. And Mr. Johnson doesn't like me, and he's got good reason. And if the rest of you slobs aren't recognizing it, fine. That keeps me in business.
