Matt Groening on the collaborative creative process
GROTH: Do you make a creative distinction between Life in Hell and The Simpsons?
GROENING: I'll take full credit and blame for Life in Hell, and I only take full credit for The Simpsons, none of the blame. [laughs] No, The Simpsons is a group effort, and I can talk about The Simpsons with great enthusiasm because I feel like I'm talking about everybody's work on the show. The writers, the animation directors, the actors have all contributed so much to making this show funny and a joy to work on.
Actually, even Life in Hell is a group effort. I work with a staff of people who help get the comic strip distributed, published, sold to bookstores, and all the rest. I really consider it all part of the creative process. There is a little more gratification to actually think up and draw the characters, but it's all part of a big process to get it in front of an audience.
